Overview
Designed and launched an enterprise-grade Team-Based Permissions framework that enabled organizations to manage access at scale while meeting governance and compliance requirements.
The Problem
As Gainsight expanded across larger enterprise customers, access control became increasingly difficult to manage.
Customers needed:
Granular visibility controls
Department-level access management
Compliance with internal governance policies
Reduced administrative overhead
The existing permission model was insufficient for complex organizational structures.
The Opportunity
Identity and access management is not just a security problem.
It is a product adoption problem.
A flexible permissions framework would:
Increase enterprise readiness
Reduce onboarding friction
Improve governance
Support expansion into larger accounts
My Approach
I partnered with customers, Customer Success teams, Engineering, and Product stakeholders to understand:
How organizations structured teams
How permissions were currently managed
Common governance pain points
Regulatory and compliance considerations
Instead of solving for individual user access, we reframed the problem around organizational teams and role-based access.
The Solution
Built a Team-Based Permissions framework enabling:
Role-based access assignment
Team-level visibility controls
Hierarchical access structures
Scalable administration workflows
The solution balanced flexibility, usability, and governance requirements.
Impact
Enabled enterprise-scale deployment scenarios
Improved governance capabilities
Supported strategic customer requirements
Contributed to retention of approximately $4M in enterprise revenue
Key Learning
Access control is fundamentally a trust problem.
The most successful enterprise platforms treat permissions not as configuration settings, but as foundational infrastructure.
